Appointments and Specialities

Joaquim Chaves Medical Clinics provide Acupuncture appointments. Acupuncture is a therapy based on traditional Chinese medicine and, according to WHO (World Health Organization) latest terminology, is considered a complementary treatment.

The therapeutic effects of Acupuncture are gained when qualified consultants apply solid and very thin needles in human tissue (usually skin and muscles). By doing this, it is possible to influence the operation of the nervous, endocrine and immunesystems and the exocrine glands.

The insertion of needles is done by doctors, in established points of the body known as “acupuncture points” or “acupoints”. These points are mainly distributed over lines known as “Chinese meridians” and “channels”, each used to obtain a specific therapeutic effect. Alternatively or complimentary, other techniques may be used, such as moxibustion (applying heat on acupuncture points or meridians) and auricular acupuncture.

Acupuncture is used as an adjunct treatment in various pathologies, namely in pain situations such as: myofascial pain (contractures, polytypic muscle pain), osteoarthritis, algoneurodystrophy, fibromyalgia and other common chronic pain situations such as low back pain and neck pain.

There are enough studies to provethat acupuncture is efficient in the relief of postoperative pain, post dental surgery pain, nausea (chemotherapy or pregnancy related) and in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain.

Acupuncture is not suited for all pathologies or clinical cases and it is up to your consultant to decide which cases should be treated with this therapy. It is the doctor’s responsibility to analyse your clinical case before deciding to treat it with acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a very safe therapeutic technique and most adverse effects are usually due to malpractice. That is why it is of extreme importance to look for a qualified professional before deciding to start this treatment. The Portuguese Physicians' Association established the specific training a doctor must have, in order to be qualified for this practice.

Only after concluding a postgraduate degree with at least 300 hours, is a doctor qualified to practice acupuncture. In Portugal, the following colleges are certified by the Physicians' Association: Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar,Oporto (since 2003); Faculdade de Medicina de Coimbra (since 2007); Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (since 2010) and Escola de Ciências Médicas da Universidade do Minho (since 2012).

Once its competence was approved by the Portuguese Physicians' Association, Acupuncture became a treatment possibility offered by doctors in clinics, hospitals and Health Care Centres, combining contemporary scientific knowledge with traditional based model.
