Paediatric Cardiology is the medical specialty that focuses on preventing, diagnosing and treating heart disease from the foetal stage up to the age of 18, monitoring the child regularly throughout their entire growth. This specialty requires a differentiated approach, as heart diseases in children have unique characteristics and develop differently than heart diseases in adults.

Acquired heart conditions
When should I consult a paediatric cardiologist?
Intervention can begin as early as the foetal stage, using a foetal echocardiogram, normally recommended by the obstetrician. Common indications include:
• Doubts regarding foetal cardiac assessment in routine tests;
• Pregnancy achieved through medically assisted reproductive technologies;
• Maternal risk factors (autoimmune disorders, pre-gestational diabetes);
• Foetal risk factors (trisomy markers, chromosomal anomalies or genetic syndromes);
• Foetal arrhythmias;
• Mother, father or older sibling with congenital heart condition.
After birth, an assessment is recommended by the paediatrician or other attending physician. The most common motives are:
• Heart murmur;
• Difficulty breathing;
• Central cyanosis (bluish discolouration of the tongue and mucous membranes);
• Palpitations or arrhythmias;
• Chest pain;
• Loss of consciousness (fainting);
• Tiring easily or difficulty gaining weight;
• High blood pressure;
• Family history of heart disease;
• Suspicion of systemic disease;
• Pre-assessment for intense sports activity or competition.
Children with genetic syndromes, such as Down syndrome, are more prone to heart problems and should undergo cardiac screening.
