Ophthalmology

doctor to carry out an ophthalmology examination on a patient

Ophthalmology is the medical specialty dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of medical and surgical eye conditions in all age groups.

To ensure healthy vision throughout life, it is essential to have regular eye exams: the first pediatric ophthalmology appointment should take place at age 3 or before starting school; in healthy adults, at least one appointment between the ages of 20 and 40 is recommended; after the age of 40, eye exams should be performed every two years and annually after the age of 50.

Risk groups - such as those with diabetes, neurological or oncological diseases, or professions with high eye strain - should undergo periodic ophthalmological evaluations and whenever visual symptoms arise.

At our clinics, you will find a team of ophthalmologists ready to monitor each patient with clinical rigor, cutting-edge technology, and a personalized approach. Schedule an ophthalmology appointment and entrust your vision to a team of medical excellence.

When to see an ophthalmologist

Visual symptoms can appear suddenly or gradually, and should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist to prevent complications. See an ophthalmologist if you experience any of the following signs:

  • Blurred vision or difficulty focusing on objects

  • Photophobia (sensitivity to light) or glare

  • Red eyes or burning sensation

  • Frequent tearing of the eyes

  • Floaters (myodesopsia) or floating spots in vision

  • Double or distorted vision

  • Pain or pressure in the eyes

  • Itching, swelling, or inflammation of the eyes

Major eye diseases (ophthalmological pathologies)

  • Astigmatism - Refractive error that causes blurred and distorted vision due to irregular curvature of the cornea.

  • Cataract - Clouding of the lens, which causes blurred vision. It is common with aging, but can affect people of any age.

  • Conjunctivitis - Inflammation of the conjunctiva, usually caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies. It causes red, itchy, watery eyes and discharge.

  • Strabismus - Misalignment of the eyes, which can cause double vision and affect visual development in children.

  • Glaucoma - Disease caused by increased intraocular pressure, which damages the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible vision loss.

  • Hyperopia - Difficulty seeing up close, common in adults and children. It can cause eye strain and headaches.

  • Myopia - Difficulty seeing far away. It is usually genetic in origin and may progress during childhood and adolescence.

  • Dry eye - A condition in which there is insufficient tear production or poor tear quality, causing discomfort and a feeling of sand in the eyes.

  • Presbyopia - A natural change in vision associated with aging, leading to difficulty focusing on nearby objects.

  • Diabetic retinopathy - Complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels of the retina and can compromise vision if not treated early.

  • Stye - Small inflammation or infection of the eyelid, causing pain, redness, and local swelling.
