Appointments and Specialities

Urology is the specialty that diagnosis and treats diseases affecting the urinary tract (male and female) and the male genital tract, connecting the medical and surgical approaches.

At Joaquim Chaves Saúde medical clinics, Urology specialists have advanced scientific knowledge of the urinary and genital tracts and use diagnosis and treatment techniques of great complexity. These knowledge and techniques are very helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary diseases, both female and male.

Urologists treat pathologies of different elements of the female and male urinary tracts –adrenals, kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra – as well as conditions related to urinary incontinence.

The organs of the male genital tract are part of this specialty – prostate, testicles and penis.

Diseases affecting the urinary and genital organs: birth defects (Pediatrics Urology), infectious diseases (kidney, bladder, prostate infections), urinary lithiasis (gallstones, ureteral and bladder stones), urinary incontinence (male and female), prostate hypertrophy (benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate adenoma), primary malignant tumours (primary malignancies) which mainly affect kidneys, bladder, prostate, penis and testicles, and secondary malignancies (malignant tumours metastasis).

Urology also studies and treats sexual problems in men, especially erectile dysfunction (impotence) and ejaculation disorders (premature ejaculation). It is the urologist’s responsibility to collaborate in research teams for the study and treatment of infertility, participating in the study and integrated treatment of men with infertility problems. It also belongs to their competence the study and performance of surgical means for the control of male fertility (vasectomy).

Most frequent diagnosis exams: surface ultrasound, endorectal ultrasound, urodynamic testing (in order to study the behaviour and operation during bladder filling and urination), study techniques that allow a direct vision of the interior of the urinary tract (endoscopic techniques) – urethroscopy (viewing of the urethra), cystoscopy (viewing of the bladder), ureteroscopy (viewing of the ureters).

Early diagnosis of prostate cancer: latest developments of prostate biopsy techniques with ultrasound and real time image control (ultrasound guided prostate biopsy) enable a timely action.

Erectile dysfunction: visual and drug stimulated tests are performed with digital control and record - axial penile rigidity and image study of arterial blood flow of the corpus cavernosum. These tests provide extremely important information that will help define treatment strategies for these patients.

Special techniques: gallstones, in many cases, may be treated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). On the other hand, prostate cancer, in some situations, may be treated with brachytherapy (“radioisotope seeds”) or cryotherapy (controlled freezing of the prostate).

Surgical treatments: there are a lot of available techniques, from classical surgery to endoscopic surgery, recurring to the use of paths and natural cavities of the urinary tract (urethra – bladder – ureters – kidney) and also laparoscopy techniques. These last ones recur to special devices and to extremely small accesses that allow minimum postoperative discomfort, a short period of internment and a fast recovery.
