Tomosynthesis - 3D Mammography
At the Miraflores Clinic, Joaquim Chaves Saúde provides the Hologic Selenia Dimensions Mammography system, which enables Tomosynthesis in every mammogram.
What is Tomosynthesis?
This is the latest technique in digital mammography which, through 1 mm sections, enables the physician to perform a 3D analysis of the full breast volume. Therefore it allows the detection of lesions that could otherwise go unnoticed.
What does the test entail?
This test is almost identical to a mammogram, providing images from various angles in a matter of seconds, with less discomfort thanks to less breast compression.
The advantages of Tomosynthesis?
Using 3D technology, the physician is able to analyse all information millimetre by millimetre, in a more detailed and precise manner, while also reducing the dose of radiation. This way, suspicious lesions can be detected early, thereby reducing the need for complementary tests and improving breast screening.
The results ofTomosynthesis?
In an American study conducted in 13 hospitals where 500.000 mammograms were carried out with and without Tomosynthesis by 139 radiologists, there was an increase in breast cancer detection and a decrease in the number of complementary tests.
